Subaru WRX 2015 J Pipe Mid Pipe and Catback Sneak Peak

If you got the new Subaru WRX, then you will notice that unlike its more fierce brother, the STI, Subaru has changed the entire turbo and manifold configuration.  This means that what has been the same design since 2002 is now gone.  On a good note, the 2015 WRX and STI use the same catback exhaust as the previous 08 WRX Sedan and 11 STI Sedan.  So to solve your more power issues from the new turbo design on the WRX is Agency Power.  Agency Power has just released these new 2015+ Subaru WRX J-Pipe and Mid-pipe kits.  The 2 piece product design allows for easy installation and the option to run a catted or catless J-Pipe.  The Subaru WRX J-Pipe features a large 3.5 inch turbine outlet merge collector that step down to either a 3 inch catalytic converter or a straight through stainless piping.  The flanges have all been water jetted to match the factory style exhaust flanges for precise fitment.  With the kit comes all gaskets and turbine studs for installation.  These parts were designed and are Made in the USA.

Porsche 991 Turbo Aftermarket Headers Built

So excited to see how things are coming along on our Porsche 991 Turbo here at Vivid Racing.  Taking things 1 step at a time, we have been developing some nice products that really show off what the Agency Power brand can do.  With individual product testing schedule for this week, our last product is a set of 3 into 1 header manifolds that the 991 TT does need.  Unlike the 996 and 997 Turbo, these headers just dont look like a great design.  With a clam shell stamped design, the flow looks like it could be greatly improved.  That is why they call it R&D though!  So our fab team here at Vivid Racing has come up with these beautiful tubular stainless steel headers.  The schedule 10 304 stainless steel headers feature 3/8″ thick flanges that have been water jet cut to perfection.  The header tube diameter has been slightly increased and with a well designed merge collector, the 991 Turbos should be spooling up a lot faster.  Stay tuned for test results and view all our Project 991 Turbo pictures here.

Porsche 991 Turbo Exhaust Video and High Flow Y-Pipe R&D

The only phrase that comes to mind is that we are “balls deep” in the R&D process of aftermarket performance parts for the Porsche 991 Turbo. We have completed the exhaust system with high flow catalytic converters and thought we would do a sneak peak sound clip. The exhaust system, as described here in our previous article, will be tested on the dyno as well as reviewed for driving characteristics on the road. The exhaust will be tested in stages as muffler with factory cats, OEM muffler with high flow cats, and muffler with high flow cats. In addition to the exhaust, we also have tubular manifolds in the works and several turbo/intake components.

One of the new parts we are working on is the “charge” pipe or Y-Pipe that goes into the throttlebody.  We have been very successful in the past with Y-Pipes on the Panamera Turbo, 996 Turbo, and 997.2 Turbo gaining proven horsepower on the dyno and quicker turbo spool for normal driving characteristics.  The amount of air flow you can get into the throttlebody is more important (IMO) than what happens after the throttlebody.  The increased airflow simply yields more power and performance.  On the 991 Turbo, the factory pipe from the intercoolers to the throttlebody is 2inch diameter and then merges fairly early.  To improve upon this design, we have increased the diameter of the piping to 2.5inch and maintained separate pipes as close to the throttlebody as we could to eliminate any unecessary turbulence.  The piping is designed to still work with the factory airbox and maybe (insert Dr. Evil pinky face) a new cold air intake.  Stepping up our Agency Power game is this nice CNC machined AP logo brace in the center.  Of course non of this is important unless it makes power and improves driveability so stay tuned for those tests!

Porsche 991 Turbo Exhaust Development

Our 991 Turbo baseline dyno is complete and now it is time to mod and get some more power.  All of the design, fabricating, and testing is being completed here at our Arizona facility.  We have a handful of goals to obtain as we start the product development stage.  Because the car is so new and tuning is a issue, we want to make everything to be modular and CEL free.  With any turbocharged vehicle, the exhaust is a restriction.  There is a fine balance between performance and sound.  With the engineering Porsche has done in the new 991 including the economy mode, drone will be even more present than before.  If you are not in Sport Mode, the car can be running at 1500rpm as your cruising at 40mph down the road.  Previous 997 Turbo had a drone spot of around 2200-2800rpm.  So reducing backpressure to gain performance while keeping a clean sound for daily driving is priority 1.

Typically a X-Pipe design gives the car a bit of a muffled tone.  That is because of the turbulence where the X junction is.  Many people like this sound, however the turbulence can affect performance.  The only time we have heard a significant sound change is with a titanium exhaust (coming next) because of how the material resonates the sound.  We chose to do our system in a full 3 inch stainless steel as a U bend with dual resonators.  From the catalytic converter, the exhaust gas goes through 1 resonator, U turns through another resonator, and then out the exhaust tip.  This gives each turbo its own full 3″ outlet.  With the U-turn and 2 resonators, this should create a clean sound.  Utilizing this with the stock catalytic converters will give some increases over stock while keeping you emission clean and CEL free.  The exhaust is being designed to work with the factory tips as well as a custom exhaust tip we will be making.

In addition to the muffler setup, the 991 Turbo will receive some high flow cat pipes.  Like the 997.2 Turbo, the muffler and cats are separate allowing for a nice modular type system.  The Metal Core Catalytic Converters have been designed to provide a reliable solution to the most common converter problems experienced by other brands with out having an absorbanent cost.  They are considered a 300cell but as bench tested, flow more than the HJS 200 cell cat.  Each cat is full stainless steel construction, including the substrate which is furnace braised to the mantle for outstanding durability.  They feature a unique end-cap design so it can’t rattle around.  The GESI proprietary precious metal loading technology used in these catalytic converters ensures greatly reduced emissions, eliminating most “Check Engine Light” issues.  With the catalytic converters mounted straight to the turbos, these are capable of withstanding up to 1500F which is about the EGT temperature at full power.  The secondary O2 sensor mount will have a built in defowler bung for extra measures to prevent any CEL’s from coming on due to cat inefficiency.

Once the exhaust is finished, we will be working on a beautiful 3 into 1 header to replace the clam-sandwhich headers to help improve turbo spool and gain more power.  Each part that we make will be independantly tested and we will do some stock to fully modified PBox testing and 1/4 mile testing.  Enjoy the pictures and please comment away with input!
