SmartTOP"s New Convertible Top Controller for Porsche 911 Carrera

Since 2002, Mods4Cars has been offering smart convertible top modules and dominating the high-end electronic sector in the automotive industry. The add-on convertible top controller, by Mods4cars, for the Porsche 911 Carrera Models 997 and 991 just received a design overhaul. The controller now ships with the exclusive Mods4cars product enclosure and offers extra assistance during installation. Getting the added convenience offered by the SmartTOP kit has never been easier.

Official Press Release: Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible owners can make using the top more convenient and more fun with the SmartTOP Add-On Convertible Top Controller. The kit offered by aftermarket automotive electronics specialist Mods4cars offers quick, full automatic one-touch operation from the console switch while driving at slow speeds. It is no longer necessary to hold down the switch for the entire duration of the operation.






Additionally the top can be opened and closed from afar using the original factory key fob remotes. A quick sequence of key presses activates a full automatic top operation. “This smart feature can be used to air out the car while still approaching and, in the opposite case, the top can quickly be closed at the first sign of impending rainfall.” explains PR-Manager Sven Tornow. In addition to these two main functions, every SmartTOP module also comes with numerous bonus features.


Inventor and manufacturer Mods4cars has now overhauled the exterior design of the SmartTOP module itself. Effective immediately all kits for the Porsche 911 Carrera come with the module in a new product enclosure. This custom designed enclosure is extremely slim and easier to install in the car than ever before. Two LEDs help during the installation process.


“The new enclosure was specifically designed for our SmartTOP modules.” Sven Tornow continues. “They now envelop all components of the internal electronics, including connectors, USB Port and LEDs. The LEDs help during installation by showing current status or troubleshooting information.” Sven Tornow concludes.


In conjunction with the supplied plug-and-play wiring adapter installation is extremely easy and can be done by anyone. Attaching the module to the car electronics is done by simply plugging in a connector. The integrated USB port allows quick and easy configuration of the user setting as well as firmware updates. Support software for Windows and Mac and firmware updates are available online, free of charge.

AEM"s New Engine Harness, Methanol Pumps and Comm Cables

AEM has just released three new products to join their already impressive lineup of performance electronics. This includes their new Infinity 24x LS harness, their new NPT fitting water and methanol pump, and their new Infinity communications cable. INFINITY PLUG & PLAY LS 24X ENGINE WIRING HARNESS

AEM has released its Plug & Play Engine Wiring Harness for GM LS race engines with a 24x timing pattern (PN 30-3821). This comprehensive, high-quality wiring harness allows racers to easily and affordably integrate the Infinity-508 Programmable ECU onto their 24x LS race engine by plugging into the factory coil sub harnesses and using factory sensors. It mates to the Infinity-508 ECU (PN 30-7108).

9-FOOT 8-INCH INFINITY IP67 COMMUNICATIONS CABLE

AEM’s 9’8” Infinity PC comms cable (PN 30-3604) provides additional length for when it can be difficult to access the Infinity ECU. Its connectors are IP67-rated (completely dustproof and are rated waterproof to 1 meter).

AEM’s 200psi high-pressure water/methanol injection pump (PN 30-3018)  is now available with 3/8 ” NPT fittings! This internally-bypassed water/methanol injection pump does not cycle on and off and provides quiet, smooth operation. It features robust construction, EPDM seals and a Santoprene diaphragm that provides consistent and reliable fluid delivery.

Water and shock-proof factory connectors for the sensors are used throughout the harness, as well as DTM-style connectors for auxiliary components. The IP67-rated ECU connector is designed to mate with AEM’s Infinity-508 ECU. Connections for a wideband O2 sensor, Drive-by-Wire and pedal, Knock, and AEMnet (AEM’s CAN bus) are integrated into the harness.

New AEM Plug and Play Programmable ECU for BMW e46 M3

AEM has released its Infinity Plug & Play programmable ECU for the North American 2001-’06 BMW E46 M3 with manual transmission. Here is their press release and more information on this Infinity plug and play ECU.

The Infinity ECU for the E46 M3 includes an application-specific start-up calibration and connects to the E46 M3 via a Plug & Play harness that is sold separately. It is designed to fit in the factory location and AEM’s engineers were able to take advantage of the E46 M3’s sophisticated CAN bus system to incorporate several features directly into factory buttons on the steering wheel and console.

A Complete Stand Alone ECU

The Infinity ECU combines with the Plug & Play harness to replace the E46 M3’s factory ECU. It controls all of the engine functions including the VANOS variable cam control system and Drive by Wire (DBW) system.

Plug & Play Harness with Expansion Port
AEM’s sealed, weatherproof Plug & Play harness (sold separately) includes dual Lambda ports, an AEMnet port for communication with other AEMnet enabled devices and an expansion port with a Deutsch DTM 12P connector for adding common aftermarket sensors including fuel pressure, air inlet temperature, MAP, boost control solenoid and ethanol content. The expansion port also includes a sensor ground, 5v reference, power from relay and high side output for activating a solenoid, and switched inputs for auxiliary radiator fan, boost target and no-lift shift.

Map Switching
AEM incorporated the Infinity’s map switching capability into the factory steering wheel buttons, eliminating the need to wire in and mount an ancillary position switch. Using InfinityTuner software, users can now select from 8 modes for boost control maps, fuel maps, timing maps, Lambda target maps and more and select maps on the fly using the factory cruise UP (+) and DOWN (-) buttons.

To ensure that drivers know which mode they are in when not connected to the Infinity ECU, when the vehicle is keyed ON the tachometer moves to a specific RPM point to indicate which map the Infinity is using (for example 3k RPM indicates Mode 3, 4k RPM indicates mode 4, etc.). When the driver changes maps while driving, the tachometer will temporarily change from revs to the RPM point that indicates the switched mode for one second and then resume normal tachometer operation. Actual engine RPM will not be affected during this one second period.

Three-Step Rev Limiter
Users can configure the CRUISE ON/OFF (1/0) as a Temporary three step limiter switch through the InfinityTuner software (vehicle speed or time after launch dependent), and can set rev limits at specific rpm by points or set a flat limiter and use it as an RPM hold for launches.

Definable Rev Limit on Tachometer
The E46 M3’s tachometer incorporates an LED ring around the outer perimeter to suggest rev limits, and the Infinity ECU uses these LEDs to indicate user defined active rev limits. For instance, if the Coolant Protect feature in InfinityTuner is set with a rev limit to 5k RPM when the engine is cold, the rev limit is indicated via the lights around the perimeter of the tachometer until defined coolant temps for normal operation are achieved. Whatever rev limits a user configures will always be displayed, with the lowest defined rev limit value taking precedence in the LEDs surrounding the tachometer. This feature applies to any protect features, the three step limiter, etc.

Traction Control
The E46 M3 comes with wheel speed/ABS sensors from the factory, and the Infinity is able to use them for traction control via fuel cut, spark cut or retracting DBW throttle response. This eliminates the need to install additional sensors for traction control.

The CRUISE SET/HOLD (speedometer icon) can be configured as a traction control enable or disable button through the InfinityTuner software. Users can define a specific slip target for traction control in the software and turn it on or off using this button, or set two slip targets and use it for a mild and aggressive traction control strategy.

User Definable DBW Throttle Response
Using the Sport button near the shifter, users can define throttle curves in the InfinityTuner DBW software and take full control of throttle response. This allows users to change throttle response rate on the fly and is ideal for setting rain mode throttle curves.

Fits In Factory ECU Location
AEM’s engineers have designed the Infinity ECU and harness to fit in the factory ECU location to maintain overall weather resistance of the electronics and deliver a clean look in the engine compartment.
