Porsche Cayman GT4 Better Braking

Building a Project Car is not a reason to own a cool tricked out car, its a way to better understand and showcase some of the parts we sell.  We have done a number of Porsche 911’s over the past 10 years.  One thing we dont have a shortage of knowledge in is Porsche Performance Parts.  The Porsche is by far one of the best performing vehicles that can be daily driven without the headache of a “supercar”.  Power, handling, and comforts are all part of even the baddest Porsche GT3RS.  When it comes to tracking a car, the Porsche will always be something to fear.

Porsche is known for their brake systems.  Going back several years, many Audi enthusiasts would take classic Porsche Big Red calipers and swap them to the S4.  Before your average cars of today like the Hyundai Genesis and the BMW 135I came with factory Brembo brakes, Porsche was the one with all the stopping power.  As the 911 evolved, so did the braking systems from basic 330mm 1piece 4 piston calipers to 380mm carbon ceramic 2 piece rotors with 6piston front calipers.  The 911’s mid engine cousin, the Boxster/Cayman had some of the Porsche cool factors.  But not until the new GT4 Cayman, has this Porsche been on the same caliber.  The GT4 features 380mm front and rear steel rotors with the front having 6 piston calipers to do 70% plus of the braking and the rear having 4 piston calipers of equal size to handle the brake distribution.  But much like the 911, how can you improve braking of the 981 GT4 and what happens to those rotors for those that truly use their Porsche the way it was intended to be?

Enter the Brembo 2 piece brake rotors.  These were extremely popular as a OEM upgrade on the 996 Turbo and even more for the 997 Turbo and GT3 as we showcased here on our car.  There are a couple reasons someone would upgrade to Brembo’s 2 piece rotors.  First, the Brembo 2 piece rotors offer superior braking over the factory rotors.  They save rotational weight and improve braking near the performance of the carbon ceramic rotors.  These PCCB rotors are extremely lightweight and stop faster than anything, but think about $15,000 price tag and these Brembo are looking better already!  The Brembo 2pc rotors are a direct replacement for the 380mm OEM rotors.  The initial investment of the Brembo rotors sounds high, but to give you what you demand in your braking needs, they will provide miles of savings.

A big benefit to using the 2 piece Brembo steel rotors over PCCB is pad choices.  With the steel rotors you can pick and choose your front and rear pad compounds.  Depending on the track you run, you can experiment with more aggressive compounds such as the Pagid RS Black’s or going with a more streetable compound such as the RS19 yellow in the front with a RS14 in the rear.  There is no missing functions of the Brembo rotors.  The steel discs feature a slotted design like the race cars for better brake heat dissipation.  The rotors use the patented McLaren hardware that only Brembo has to offer a true 2 piece rotor giving your brake pads equal wear and equal force.  When it comes time to replace the rotors, the disc is the only consumable part of the rotor upgrade.  When you need to get new brake rotors, you just replace the disc and the hardware.  Compared to the 1 piece steel rotors found on the regular Cayman S or even 911, they will last four times as long.
